To fasten securely and create an adjustable length use the Fisherman's Knot shown in the 2nd image. Tie an Overhand Knot in the running ends. Pull one end through and tie it around the loop with a 2nd Overhand Knot. When the loop is stretched both knots lie snugly against each other.
